i was looking at a site about skin cancer and it made me decide to check myself, i noticed to asymmetrical black/dark brown spots on my upper thigh and a new mole on the back of my neck and shoulder, they are both less than a cm but im still wondering how serious it could be, i keep reading melanoma is "not serious if caught early" but how early is early? i just found them but i think the one on my neck has been there for about a year and i didnt think anything of it til now, i have a dr appointment but just want to get some ideas of what to expect if its bad news

as far as i know, usually they are the size of a pencil eraser, or bigger, however, smaller ones are becoming more common. think of your lifestyle(religious sunbather) and if youve been prone to moles and skin spots your whole life, and no matter what, go see your dr asap. better safe than sorry. early is what you describe, when you find a new mole or one that changes shape, color, texture, im just not sure how fast it progresses sorry.
Reply:Probably NOTHING...most moles are not cancerous. I had squamous cel carsinoma...aka...skin cancer...2nd leading cause of death in america (7 yrs ago). I think I had mine for at least a yr and didn't know it! The doctor cut it out and I've been cancer free ever since! good luck!

It may not be serious but only an exam can tell you that, no one of us on the computer can determine that.
I'm 76, have had all three forms of skin cancer, melanoma the worst kind, found on my chest over 4 years ago, had it removed surgically and here i am still kicking!
Keep checking those moles, don't worry needlessly and GOOD LUCK from one who has been there.

Why has Mederma irritated my skin?
I've been using mederma for about 4 days now and today I discovered that the skin around my scar is a little irritated(red). If I stop using Mederma, will it go away. I has a mole removement over my lip and really don't like the scar at all. My folks say thats unoticeable but it is to me. Any advice is much appreciated.

I have previously had a couple serious sunburns that have caused blisters, one time very large blisters. Recently, I have noticed an old mole near the area of the sunburns has a white mark near the center and has started to have some tenderness. I have talked to some people, none of them medical professionals, and they say the only reason it is tender is because I have been feeling it. Could these be symptoms of skin cancer?

And as far as the green color.... i have no idea... do you have olive colored skin by any chance?

I have a lot of beauty marks, and a mole since i was young. Are these signs of skin cancer?
As long as they don't get bigger or change shape there is nothing to worry about, it's normal and common to be born with beauty marks and moles.

Reply:Moles do grow or increase in size sometimes. I, though, do have skin cancer, I am 33 and you NEVER know what it may look like. The 4 times I have had areas surgically removed from my body, they looked like teeny-tiny harmless freckle that EVERYBODY has, not even raised off the skin. Thank goodness I rushed to the doctor for something that looked not much more that a little bug bite, that the doctor was able to find each of these and remove them. It's really very simple, takes only a few minutes, and pretty painless. Go see a dermatologist right away, don't be scared. You will feel so much better after you have. Good luck, you'll be OK.

the surgeon took one look at the freckle turned mole and said he had to cut it out immediately ...
he removed it and send it away for testing...
it came back the most dangerous type of melanoma...
i have since had node biopsies and a neck dissection......
i am 32 and cancer free...
go to the dr....
in the mean while... look into what i was told to do by other cancer survivors....
I was told to give up dairy,
take vitamin c,
take flax oil pills,
buy organic foods,
use natural products to wash your clothes,
your hair,
eat organic meat,
use non flouridated toothpaste,
rid your kitchen of anything plastic that might touch food....
use a cast iron frying pan....
take hot showers and scrub skin with a softbrush
use a sauna if you can....
exercise...
research immunizations and the risks....
we are avoiding sun screen (the chemicals in it)
I was diagnosed with skin cancer a year ago and have made tons of changes...

Hmm, I have a small lump under my skin... what can it be?
I'm a 19 yr old female with a small lump under my skin on my left shoulder. It's about .75 of a centimeter and a little purplish in color. But it's not the color of the lump itself but the skin on top of it is just discolored a little. It's perfectly round and is not a mole or wart or anything like that. I don't think it's a cancer because it's not irregularly shaped and isn't growing out of control.
My first thoughts were that it was a cyst or something that was in the skin for a long time and then it just started turning purple because there was old blood in it or something. Last night i took a needle and poked it fairly deep ( ouch!) and nothing came out! So now I am sitting here wondering... When i touch it it's kind of firm and does not hurt at all. Oh yeah and the skin on top of it is kind of wrinkly but yet smooth looking. So it's shiny in a way with soft wrinkles on them. Thanks for the incoming responses! :3

I have very very light skin and so i am very cautious of sun burns. I havent been burned in 3 years (not even just a little) Well I just got burned 2 weeks ago, it was so depressing. Anyway, the burn went away and i am a little darker.
I am concerned becasue there is this thing on my back (shoulder) at first it just looked like I was peeling but its STILL there. Its all red and brown around it, its almost looks like a bruise. Well i do have a mole on my lower back but it looks ok but it a little bit bigger than normal...do you think i am ok? or could it be skin cancer?

This red/brown mark... is it big enough that if you had it before the sun burn, you'd of noticed it? If so, it is 99.9999% not skin cancer because skin cancer simply doesn't just appear following sunburns, they require mutations and other things to "go wrong", let alone the time for the cell divisions for it to get to the point for it to get big enough to be visible.
Also, you mention at the same time that you have a mole on your back, but you'd notice a somewhat dramatic change if it were melanoma - and the fact you're already looking at the red/brown thing will effect what you perceive as having happened to your mole.
My advice... look at the first question I ask you... If your reasonably sure the red/brown thing wasnt there before the sun burn, DON'T WORRY - you're okay.

Very itchy skin, what could it be?
im not allergic to anything at all ive not changed my washing powder, or anything my lifestyle is exactly the same, but my arms back legs and face have been extremly itchy, i am going for a biopsy on my mole soon, i may be silly saying this but could this be a sign of skin cancer?

You are allergic to something. For me it's food. Take an antihistamine and it will stop.
It could be due to the stress of having an upcoming biopsy.

Sounds more like an allergy.
Buy an antihistamine (Benzidrine) It will stop the itching!
Reply:Put your mind at ease. Itchy skin is not skin that's cancerous. More likely it's skin that's really dry.
Neutrogena makes an anti-itch moisturizer that's pretty good.
You might also try an extra rinse cycle in the laundry, or switching from powdered detergent to liquid (which rinses out of clothes better), since residual detergent can start up the itch cycle.
Reply:usually not, it could be bed mites...vacumme your bed and wash the sheets in hot water...bet ya it stops..either that or you have eaten or come in contact with something your body does not like...drink lots of fresh water...it will help flush the system..hope it helps

Reply:Best not to be thinking about cancer too soon, it could be any number of things, dermatitis covers a whole range of itchy skin rashes. It could be an allergic reaction to something youve recently ingested, could be prickly heat thats causes the itchyness. I wouldnt get too worked up over it, explain to your doctor whats happening and they will be able to diagnose better for you. It could be a case of giving you some type of cream to help with the itching and keep it under control.
Dermatitis affects everyone at some point in their lives, if your skin has slightly raised flaky patches it could be an early sign of Excema or even Psoriasis but a skin specialist will be able to determine what it is.
Good luck withe biopsy.
Reply:i just went to the dermotologist for dry extremely itchy skin that i would itch until it was raw, i was told i have eczema. The more you scratch the more it itches. I got some steroid cream and after 1 week ta-da i don't itch anymore and my rashes are gone.
Reply:could be stress, if you are worried about your upcoming biopsy. stress does all kinds of goofy things to our bodies. take an antihistamine and try to relax. Also, as we age, we may become allergic to new things, or old allergies may be reduced or go away. if the antihistamine doesn't help, contact your doc.

Neutrogena makes an anti-itch moisturizer that's pretty good.
You might also try an extra rinse cycle in the laundry, or switching from powdered detergent to liquid (which rinses out of clothes better), since residual detergent can start up the itch cycle.

Reply:Best not to be thinking about cancer too soon, it could be any number of things, dermatitis covers a whole range of itchy skin rashes. It could be an allergic reaction to something youve recently ingested, could be prickly heat thats causes the itchyness. I wouldnt get too worked up over it, explain to your doctor whats happening and they will be able to diagnose better for you. It could be a case of giving you some type of cream to help with the itching and keep it under control.
Dermatitis affects everyone at some point in their lives, if your skin has slightly raised flaky patches it could be an early sign of Excema or even Psoriasis but a skin specialist will be able to determine what it is.

Reply:i just went to the dermotologist for dry extremely itchy skin that i would itch until it was raw, i was told i have eczema. The more you scratch the more it itches. I got some steroid cream and after 1 week ta-da i don't itch anymore and my rashes are gone.

Skin Cancer??
I noticed pn my habd that I had a mole. Well, its been there since i was born, so i don't pay attention to it much but i noticed that it is a tiny bit bumpy, and it looks a tiny bit odd shaped. Its not odd colored its just brown. My grandfather had skin cancer, and so did my aunt.I dont get sunburnt much and if i ever go outside I put on sunscreen! I told my Friend and they said I was just freaking out! I am so scared! Is it Skin Cancer or not?

I am paranoid about skin cancer?
I used to use the tanning bed (just in the summer) when I was a teen and early 20's. Now, I am 27 and don't tan. The thing is I am so pale and I want to be tan. I hate that self tanning stuff cause it stinks. Also,every time I have a weird looking mole or anything I am super paranoid about it being melanoma. I get skin checks every year. Does anyone think that the sun is bad? Can I get just a little like an hour on the weekend? Let me know what you think.

If you haven't had skin cancer yet, I would just continue using sun screen every day, or use make up with SPF. I little bit on the weekends is not bad for you at all, your skin needs a little sun to stay healthy, just make sure not to over-do it.

My question to you is, do you think it is really worth being tan now and risking skin cancer in the furture. Do you think about the dangers of tanning, or just think it won't happen to you when you are baking in the sun and/or tanning booth?
I just want to say to you people who fake and bake or sit in the sun unprotected for hours and hours like I did as a teenager (I'm now 26): It is NOT worth it. Trust me. Take care of your skin!

Fake tans and long hours of baking in the sun are harmful and it's just NOT a natural thing to do. When you go against nature, a lot of problems arise. Most people are very ignorant to the dangers of attaining fake tans and baking in the sun and only come to realize the severity of it when they contract or develop some form of unfavorable results. It's not worth the risk.
Love the skin you're in, don't try too hard to change it and be something that you're not.

Really weird skin rash?
This rash as far as I can tell started on my right hand by a spider bite last summer. The bite stayed for a long time and then around September it started getting bigger on my hand. Now in the past 3 or 4 months, I have a rash on my left forearm and some on my right arm.
On my right hand there is a very large spot that is red and bumpy near the thumb. There is also a smaller one on the right side of the wrist area that is very bumpy and dry.
On my right arm all that are present are white patches where my skin is discolored but not red or bumpy.
My left arm has a large white patch (about 1 inch by 3 inches) and this has some red bumps around the outside of the shape. There is some scabbing there because I got sick of it and itched like a mad man...bad, i know.
And just last week I discovered that there is what appears to be a mole on my neck. The mole is next to a knew dark red bumpy rash.
They all itch quite badly, but not all the time.

Reply:No tests from the home that would be any more accurate than flipping a coin. A dermatologist can do a biopsy if he suspects skin cancer. This tissue sample is then read by a pathologist who will then say whether or not the tissue is benign or malignant. Then the report will tell you what type skin cancer, what type cells, and whether or not the cancer was deeper than the bit of tissue removed by the dermatologist. This determines whether you need additional treatment and the extent of this treatment.

- Have your health professional look for any suspicious skin growths during any health examination.

Reply:shape,size,color,if it scabs could be basil cell carcinoma, if it is red all the time. You really need to let them take a sample of it and send it off to be sure.

Reply:just go to you family docot or and get them to look at it... more than likely he/she will remove it right in the office and have it sent out... I had a mole I worried to death over for 4 years... I was losing my mind! NO REALLY... until I couldn't take another minute of it... I though this is skin cancer I'm going to die I need to know how long I have... I went to my doctor in tears...scared is not the word.. he looked concerned to and said it needed to be removed and biopsied at once.... a week of waiting, 2 stiches...and I GOT MY LIFE BACK... it was not cancer Thank the lord... so please just go to your doctor chances are it's really nothing
Reply:No tests from the home that would be any more accurate than flipping a coin. A dermatologist can do a biopsy if he suspects skin cancer. This tissue sample is then read by a pathologist who will then say whether or not the tissue is benign or malignant. Then the report will tell you what type skin cancer, what type cells, and whether or not the cancer was deeper than the bit of tissue removed by the dermatologist. This determines whether you need additional treatment and the extent of this treatment.
If the the condition is benign they also report whether you have warts, or whatever else going on.
