I went to the doctor a week ago to have two odd moles looked at. She decided to do an incisional biopsy on them. Yesterday the doc called and said that one of them was a "highly atypical nevus" and that I should come back ASAP to get more tissue removed with a margin. I'm going in tomorrow to do that. When I asked what that means, she said that we'd talk about it in person. Now I'm worried.
I'm only 26, but I have a lot of risk factors for skin cancer--family history, blue eyes and red hair, pale skin and freckles, many many bad sunburns, congenital nevi (moles I was born with), and a precancerous mole that was removed 7 years ago. That's why I keep a close eye on my skin and went to the doc in the first place.
Does this mean that I have (or probably have) skin cancer?

First, "naevus" or "nevus" just means a pigmented lesion on your skin, like a birth mark. Most are benign. However, when she called, she obviously had gotten some suspicious pathology reports back, and wants to take a closer look. Getting a sample with a border allows her to compare your normal cells with those of the area she's testing. When she takes the sample, they preserve it (usually in alcohol), then embed it in a parafin block, and take very very thin slices of it with a microtome blade. These slices are mounted on microscope slides, and a pathologist reviews them for signs of malignancy.
There are some things you can look at on your own body, though. They're called the ABC's of skin cancer, and diagnosticians and general practitioners learn them in med school. A = asymmetry (the mole is not a circle or oval, but blebbs, and has an inconsistent shape) B = Border (if the border is not smooth, it may signal a problem) and C = colour (color changes in nevi are not good. normal colors are shades of brown, turning red or black can signal a problem). These rules are not hard and fast, but serve as a good tool.

Reply:The only way to be sure is when you get the results from your doctor, i will say however skin cancer is one of the most non-lethal types of cancer out there so in all honesty you shouldn't be too worried.
You seem to be taking care of yourself and very self aware so that also counts in your favour - try not to worry, you'll be ok.
Reply:ok, the girl before me is wrong. certain types of skin cancer are not very deadly, but malignant melanoma is VERY deadly.
the good news, malignant melanoma doesn't arise from moles.
your results and symptoms could be representative of skin cancer. it's treatable if it is. but try not to worry about it until you get your results back, because worrying now will not make things any better.

Bad moles?
Ok I have moles, but they dont really raise off my skin too much. Some of them, I swear I have had since I was little and I'm not sure when I got them. Like one on my forhead and another on my cheek. I have a TON of beauty marks in random places and I keep getting them even when parts of my body (like my bum) arent exposed to the sun. The ones that I have been getting a lot lately are not raised they are just teeny freckles. I kind of like them but if they could be cancerous, I'd like to get them checked out.

I have a lot of those freckles on my face and I have some freckles on my neck that are above the skin (moles I guess), and I brushed one off one time by mistake while brushing my hair.

Reply:Moles, beauty marks, birth marks, freckles (a rose by any other name...) are there for life unless you have them removed by a doctor. Don't try the at home products. Moles have a root, removing the surface and leaving the root, it can and will grow back. Like hair. :-)

I had a medium sized dark mole on my leg.Now my skin got injured above the mole,do I get any disease or caner?
If the mole is black, not circular in shape or seems to be getting bigger, see a doctor as soon as possible.

Normally if the injury is treated properly nothing should happen. There is no relation between a mole and the injury. Moles are birth abnormalities as normal as a skin except it looks different

Skin Cancer or just getting older??
Hi All,
I had a question about moles and birthmarks... should I be concerned of skin cancer??
Ive had scattered brown birthmarks and moles all over my body since birth especially a big one on my knee. Im very pale so its easy to spot these marks!!
Well, Im 28 now and I notice Im seeing spots I never saw before. They are different shades of brown, a few feel "raised".
Some are "perfect round" and others aren't.
The only time a doctor said anything was about one on my chest that he wanted me to keep an eye on but that was when I was 18 and I have not seen him since and other doctors that have seen that area haven't said anything. This spot has changed in color and is raised.
So my question is.... am I showing signs of skin cancer?? Or is it normal to develop new moles as you get older?? (this is what my dad said.)
Im NOT an outdoor person so ya, I stay indoors all the time. No beaches for me. I sunburn very easily which is why I tend to stay indoors.
Advice please? Thanks

Don't chance it. Go to the doctor and ask specifically to have your skin checked. Don't wait for the doctor to find them. Take charge and tell the doctor you want to be checked for this. Skin cancer kills.

It's nothing to take lightly. I'm not here to scare, but melanoma is very deadly. My first wife died of it at 44 years old. Get checked out.

A few months ago I notcied this small mole like thing on my perieneum area next to my rectum, I have had hemmies, but I am not sure what this is. I haven't had sex so I know it isn't sex related can this be just a mole or can you have skin tags anywhere in that area, it's not really a flap of skin it's more like a mole or could it be a hemmie in that area? Thanks for any help.
