Recently my grandmother on my father's side got a cancerous mole removed. I hear that if your relatives have skin cancer that I should get it checked. I do have some moles on my body but I've always thought it was a normal thing and never got it checked. There was one time I tried to have 2 moles removed on my cheek but they grew back. I don't really go out in the sun much. Should I just go and get a skin exam for the hell of it? Never had a skin exam before, what's it like? How can I decrease my risk other than decreasing my exposure to the sun?
Should I go get a skin exam at age 26? What's a skin exam like? Any equipment used?
It's never too early, in fact, skin cancer is generally known as more of a "young person's cancer", especially with how much tanning young people ten to do. The dermatologist will basically just look over your whole body really carefully and examine any moles or marks you have and decide if any need to be removed.
To decrease your risk, wear sunscreen every day especially cloudy days, when UV rays are actually more prevalent and dangerous. Wear sunglasses and hats outdoors.
